HelpNDoc – Windows utility for creating help files
Review by on
If you have difficulties with a program, you can access its help file and look for a solution. Help files are included in almost any program and most of them offer a wide range of contents. Creating a help file may seem difficult or at least tedious, due to all the topics, sub-topics, keywords and so on. With HelpNDoc, you may create your own documentation file, without too much effort. It is an advanced text editor, with a familiar interface and a large variety of tools, for creating topics, organizing them and more.

The software works on Windows 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 and it is free for personal use. With a modern day Internet connection, it should not take long to download the 15.7 MB setup file. The installation procedure is fast and you will not have to install any prerequisite tools or services.

HelpNDoc provides a MS Word-like interface, which means that you will work in a familiar environment. You can find the options for starting a new project, opening or importing an existing one on the software's Welcome page. Besides typing a title, when you start a new project, you can also create a table of contents. To create a table of contents, you just need to type your topics and sub-topics, in the same text box. Alternatively, you can import a table from an existing project.

Topics are displayed in a tree structure, on the left side of the window and you can type your contents in the larger area on the right. The available options are organized in ribbon menus. You can use them to insert symbols, keywords, create new topics, change their icons, header, footer and other properties, change your font settings and much more. It is also possible to insert documents, images, movies or HTML code in your help file.

You can reveal and pin different lists, for the created keywords and variables, by hovering with the mouse cursor over one of the tabs located on the right edge of the interface. You can insert certain details, which are recorded by the system, by dragging and dropping a variable on your page. For example, if you want to insert the time or date, you need to look for the appropriate variables.

Many functions are similar to the features that you would find in any program from the MS Office suite. You can insert hyperlinks, anchors, page breaks, align your paragraphs and more. When your project is complete, you may export it as a file, in CHM, HTML, DOC, PDF, EPUB or Kindle EBook format. Additionally, the software allows you to generate code in C/C++, Delphi, Visual Basic or other languages.

The software is simple and easy to use and it allows you to export your project in various formats. It provides many familiar features, as well as its own unique functions. HelpNDoc works on multiple Windows platforms and it is free for personal use.

There are no serious issues to mention.

If you are looking for a reliable solution for creating a manual or other documentation files, HelpNDoc is an excellent choice.
